2014 Goal #1: Keep it fun!

I know I'm a fun teacher, at least that's what the kids tell me.
My first goal of 2014 is to maintain that fun in the classroom.  I think this will be a goal for me every single year, especially once I creep into my 30s and 40s I still want to be a fun teacher!  And don't worry, the curriculum gets covered :)
Here is a wonderful video that helps to remind me that teaching Science has to be fun :)
Tyler DeWitt's TED Talk:

How I kept it fun in 2013:
Awesome bulletin boards
 Lots of games!
 My trip to NASA
 Even more games!
 Decorating my classroom
 Doing art in Science class
 Even more games :)

Remember to have fun in 2014!

How To Make Your Covers POP!

I was thinking about my product covers and how they all look the same, but they've got nice different color patterns... but honestly it has become more difficult to think of color combinations for them.  Thanks to Pinterest and color swatches (in particular Design Seeds) I now have a pretty much limitless supply of color combinations.  Here is a tutorial on what you can do to make your product covers POP!

Here are a few examples I played with:

The next two are based off of the same color swatch.  I can see one being great for Valentine's Day products and the other for Christmas products!

Good Luck!

My School's Christmas Present to a Student Fighting Stage 4 Cancer

Get the tissues ready!  Here is the video my school made to help support a Grade 10 student battling stage 4 cancer.  She is a wonderful young lady who I have had the pleasure of working with through the musical production.  I love my school!
Merry Christmas!

Add a Little Extra Christmas Cheer in Math & Science Class This Week

Hi all!
As we get closer and closer to Christmas, and the students are excited it might be hard to keep their attention.  My strategy: unit tests in the last two weeks.  Added bonus: I can take all Christmas Break to mark them and not feel any guilt about handing them back after 2 weeks!
Your strategy might include some Christmas games this coming week.
Here are some ideas:

Science Carols:

 Paper Airplane Crash Course:
 Minute to Win It:
 Festive Density Column:
 Egg Drop Down the Chimney:
 To the Moon and Back:

All of these can be found in my Winter Freebie here.

If you teach Math, I will have my Money Math - Christmas Adding Coins Bingo on sale this week.  It has everything you need - just print and play!  There are 30 cards in both the USD and CAD versions.  Check them out!

4 quizzes, 4 assignments, 1 set of test corrections and 3 class sets of projects.
Do you ever feel like marking is a never ending battle?

Songza - Acoustic versions of pop songs playlist
I've armed myself with my best weapons:
Mr. Sketch Markers - my fave for quick marking like matching and multiple choice

Frixion Erasable Pens - my fave for projects and writing comments
No, I don't have any sponsorship from either Mr. Sketch or Pilot.  But considering I've sent the CEO's kids to College, I wouldn't mind a few free packs! ;)

If I defeat this marking my reward is being able to cut out laminated task cards!

Need a break from marking?

Twitter Board In Action

My pin for how to create this Twitter Board using the Silhouette Cameo <3 has over 400 repins!  Wow!  How cool is that?!

Original Post
Pin

I want to show you all the finished product, and how I use it in class.

I used the twitter birds that I cut out using the Cameo and arranged them onto 2 pieces of black paper that I cut from a single sheet of Bristol Board.  I also found the twitter font!  I had to alter the e and s myself to make it look good, but that was really easy to do on the Silhouette Studio software.
On another Bristol Board that was cut into two pieces, I have room for the Top Tweets from the last round of tweeting, and the most intelligent Science-related tweets on the #sciencerules board.  These tweets stay around longer than on the other two boards.

The kiddos put their tweets on the board in order. Since the twitter birds are all numbered, I know when all of the kiddos have stuck their tweets up.  The posters themselves are laminated and on the cupboards by the door, so the kids can put them up as they leave too.
The kids were tweeting about what was wrong in the film Gravity. that we went to see together.
I designed these sticky notes on PowerPoint and then uploaded them to Vistaprint.ca.  I initially got 10 pads of sticky notes for $25 all in with shipping.

All-in-all, this is going to take at least a couple of hours to do start to finish, and that's with the help of the Silhouette Cameo.  Is it worth it?  I would tweet:

I love my twitter board and the exit sticky notes my students use!
